The CAT aspirants are following all the expert guidelines for excelling in CAT 2010. One of the winning criteria is taking mock tests. But while taking mock tests, they observe that their scores don’t increase after a certain level. In this article of MBAUniverse.com, we will discuss the methods you should employ to improve your scores in the mock tests.
Improve your strong areas
At this stage, it is futile to spend much time in studying the areas which you are weak in. So you should now focus on your strong areas only and maximize your scores in those areas. But before that, you must judge the importance of the area you are weak in. “Identify your areas of weakness – especially those topics which have a higher weightage in CAT and work on them in a systematic manner,” says Vinayak Kudva, Product head, IMS Learning.
Take tests in a simulated environment
You must take mock test in a simulated environment. It is time that you start taking full length comprehensive tests. Point out the mistakes which you commit consistently. Find out the nature of the mistakes. “If these are conceptual mistakes, go back to the basics and brush up these areas. Then again take a sectional test on those areas. If you feel comfortable enough, then go for full length mock test. If it is a silly mistake, then you need to practice even more,” mentions Gejo Sreenivasan, Principal Consultant, Career Launcher.
Frequency of taking mock tests
It is suggested by the experts that you should take two to three mock tests in a week and analyze them in between the two tests. By taking these mock tests, you will know where you stand. You will also develop a strategy which you should follow in the actual test. Such strategies include choosing the right questions, selecting the right section and question to start with, doing the rough work properly and avoiding any error. Since CAT exam marks you negatively for a wrong attempt, you should be really careful with your question selection. As says Gautam Puri, Vice Chairman, Career Launcher, “Out of 60 questions, if you attempt 45 to 50 questions correctly, you can get a call from the top B-schools.”
Between the two mock tests
Between the two mock tests, you should analyze the first test. Kudva suggests the following methods to analyze a mock test:
1. Set standards for desired level of accuracy and attempts for every test that you take – before the test starts.
2. Check how you have performed with respect to desired levels – and also with respect to the cut-offs.
3. Identify the gaps – which are the areas or topics that are bringing down your accuracy or attempts
4. Identify those questions that you must have solved to improve your attempts or accuracy. These are questions that have been solved accurately by a majority of the toppers.
5. Do a question-by-question analysis to see if you can further improve your scores – by avoiding careless mistakes, by electing the right questions, by not overspending time on a particular question.
Prioritize quality over quantity and accuracy over attempts
You should first note if you are analyzing the tests properly and utilizing the analysis. Otherwise there will be no use taking the mock tests. “Focus on ‘Quality’ practice rather than simply solving too many tests,” says Kudva.
Similarly, accuracy has a lot of significance in the scoring of your test. If you are not accurate enough, you won’t be able to score high even if your attempt is so. So you need to follow the strategy suggested by Kudva, “Try to maximize your attempts and accuracy in every test you take (something like 85 per cent attempt with 90 per cent accuracy). This approach would ensure that you clear the cut-offs irrespective of the difficulty levels.”
