If you think that, like the Macarena, campus speech codes were mocked into obscurity during the 1990s, think again. Approximately 71 percent of American campuses still impose highly restrictive “red light speech codes” on college students, notes Greg Lukianoff, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE). Recently Reason.tv’s Ted Balaker sat down with Lukianoff to discuss the sorry state of free expression in higher education, why you can’t call Harvard men sissies, and how a student got expelled for criticizing a university president on Facebook. Approximately 8.5 minutes. Shot by Paul Detrick and Hawk Jensen. Edited by Austin Bragg. Thank you FIRE for helping Colorado State University rethink its policy on “Free Speech Zones.”
I miss the days when liberals were adamant free speech and civil liberties defenders like Greg and not government handpuppets.
@fitobcnfito please give an example of your so-called extremist capitalist you reference. Must be nice to sit in glass houses with no facts or examples and throw stones of complete nonsense.
@bigG010 Utopia is an ideal social system, not possible (Anarchy).
No government is just part of the anarchist utopia.
Libertarians are pro “free market”, and extremist capitalists… only logic reason to be so, is to be in the part of the status quo that is going to benefit you from that unfair situation: so if you are libertarian and pour, you are plain stupid, if rich, logic.
@fitobcnfito Recheck your definition of utopia. No where is it defined as NO GOVT. Libertarians control capital and the market? Where do you come up with this stuff?
@bigG010 As per no goverment, I mean LESS, so it’s going twards the same objetive, NO goverment, as mentioned, is a Utopia. actually, Libertarians just want less goverment of state, and more goverment of market, since that’s what they control, capital and market, and is just a diferent way of control, state or money.
The american dream, you have to dream it, since is not true any more.
American Dream is not about building an empire out of nothing, is about having the FREEDOM to do so.
@bigG010 There is not even equal justice, in today society, who has the best most expensive lawyers, gets law to his side. And I reffer to my previous post. I’m born with 0, some people with 1.000.000 or more. No Justice, no Freedom
@bigG010 I dont care about Rockefeller, I care about The Kings, and their friends, who took over what ever they felt like, and it was that, or you are dead.
And a way for monopoly, is banning you from the initial capital to enter an industry, so is not beeing afraid, is simple: if I’m born with 0, and other is born with 1.000.000, This is not a fear situation or competition, since I work for him, with my labour, to rent his resources, that I need. (that is not freedom)
@fitobcnfito So many things wrong here…but let me focus on libertarianism. does not advocate NO GOVT…..they advocate LIMITED GOVT…especially when talking about federal. Libertarians believe in stronger states rights and focus more on state and local govt. Libertarians believe whole heartedly in the constitution and of course the rule of law. The American dream is all about building an empire out of nothing. Cannot happen fairly without capitalism and free markets and society.
@fitobcnfito 1) You do not know libertarian platform at all do you? 2) Govt in and of itself is not moral nor immoral. A govt that enforces the RULE OF LAW (equal justice) is not only a moral govt, but necessary when forming civilized society. When everyone has equal justice, then there is no fear involved when 2 free people enter into a contract over resources that is equally enforced on both sides. A govt that has lined pockets and enforces laws on a whim is fear competition. Venezuela.
@fitobcnfito Original distribution? Originally everyone had everything they wanted in the Garden of Eden. Are you then telling me you are blaming not only your ancestors for your current situation, but everyone’s ancestors? Get real. Do you not know the story of JD Rockefeller? Born into nothing made something of himself. Made himself and others wealthy. Free market rules. Accessed all the necessary resources he needed to succeed. Are you afraid of hard work to gain wealth and success?
@bigG010 The utopia part of anarchy, is taking this to the extreme, that those rules would not be needed, neither a goverment to reinforce them, since it would be natrual by education and empathy twards your equals.
Never the less, I agree with libertarians in “no goverment”, and socialists in “fear distribution of means and resources” => that, would be a free market
@bigG010 Diference between me (anarchy) and a Socialist, is that a Socialist only see this posible by administrating those resources by a central state, wile I root for no goverment (since is not moral), and redistribution of those resources in equality, so it’s realy a fear competition. And a set of rules/Law, to trade and relate to others.
That is what Libertarians dont want, since thay are mostlly those with that unfair adventage to start from
@bigG010 But the original distribution of wealth is not based in free market, but violent takeover of resources. Is not free if I have limited or none resources, to compete in equality. I’m banned any access to same opportunity as many have by birth, and that is not freedom, is fake.
So yes law and order, based on first fear distribution. Now, you do not have access to those resources, they are mostlly form the descendents of criminals.
Is like starting a race 200 yards ahead and saying fair.
@fitobcnfito Actually, the basis of a free market and a free society is NOT the equal distribute of resources, it IS the RULE OF LAW. This creates the LEVEL playing field for all to enter to access these resources. It’s up to you to work to get/sell the resource.
Liberals, libertarian, republican… call it any name, only people up for freedom are anarchist, the rest, fight for their own freedom, not colective.
Ofcourse, you will all call me a Socialist, for seeking equal distribution of resources, that is the basic base to have a real free market, and live in a free society.
@jortizz unfortunately, so few colleges are run on private merits anymore; they all take public money; which opens them up to scrutiny. If Yale as a completely private institution banned certain kinds of speech, I have no problem. But unfortunately, every “private” college accepts public funds; which muddies the waters.
@jortizz Most universities are run by the states.
@philobiology Just because something is “not-left” doesn’t make it right. You can’t have an accurate political spectrum with one axis.
Diversity of sex, race, religion… these are all okay but diversity of ideas and opinion? That’s downright dangerous!
@riser185 or so long as you threaten violence.
@FatherTime89 there is like a McCarthy style black list on people who are Conservative or even other than the modern liberal mind set.
@FatherTime89 But I don’t think you get the searing hatred from the right as you do from the left. True, Conservatives can also hate you for your disagreements with them but I think the societal perception is that Liberals are understanding and accepting of differences. By differences I mean something like gay or not having a traditional lifestyle. It just seems to me that the area that Liberals are lacking in tolerance is in the difference of thought or say opinion. Just look at Hollywood, ^^^
Every human is born free so.. stay free.
Q. Do students at private colleges and
universities have free speech rights?
A. Yes. Education Code Section 94367 provides
free speech protections at private colleges and
universities.
@puremilkgenius That’s true too, but they mentioned Yale University…a private university.
