Study abroad opportunities in Italy continue to be a popular choice for undergraduate students. According to the Open Doors Report 2007, an online report on international exchange, Italy is the second most popular destination for U.S. students to study abroad, up 5% from the previous year. Europe’s overall share of the study abroad market as a region continues to be the largest with 58.3%, although this percentage has declined from 2004-05 (60.3%) to 58.3% in 2005-06.
International Studies Abroad (ISA) announces the launch of a new study abroad program for undergraduate college students at St. John International University in Torino, Italy, beginning in summer 2008. ISA currently provides study abroad programs in Florence and Rome.
Jay Bartletti, ISA Site Specialist for Torino says, “The ISA Torino program is the answer to students’ requests for an authentic Italian study abroad experience that is located outside of the traditional Italian destinations.”
Torino is the capital of Italy’s Piedmont region which borders France and Switzerland. It sits at the feet of the Italian Alps and has a population of approximately 1 million people. As host city of the 2006 Winter Olympics, Torino established itself as a vibrant and exciting destination in northern Italy.
Quite possibly one of the biggest advantages to living and studying in Torino is the ease with which students can get to know locals. Torino is a great place to practice Italian with natives, without the challenges of integration posed by other larger Italian tourist cities. Additionally, its proximity to the rest of Europe also makes it an ideal vantage point from which to travel and experience not only all of Italy, but surrounding countries.
The majority of courses are taught in English, and Italian language courses are also available at all levels. Students can choose from courses in many subject areas, including Business and Economics, Studio Art, Art History, Political Science, Religious Studies, Liberal Arts, and Italian Language, Literature and Culture. Upper and lower division courses are available at St. John International University, which is the international campus of its partner university, the Scuola Superiore per Mediatori Linguistici in Cuneo, Italy.
